Chapter Thirty

All talk of wills and magistrates was suspended the next afternoon, as the girls and their IF-turned-real companions and partners went out to the coffeehouse to enjoy Simfest.

A host of local performers sang, performed acrobatic maneuvers, and dazzled with magic tricks. Once again, the royal press corps and other members of the paparazzi were there to record their every move.

After Simfest, the girls and their partners went their separate ways. Anastasia and Lucian went to the movie theater to see an art-house tearjerker...

...while Alexandra and Patrick went to the arboretum. Outdoorsy types they were, they spent awhile stargazing into a clear sky.
They figured the arboretum was a quiet place to spend an evening, except they heard the whirr of a camera. Alexandra turned around. It was Demarcus from the royal press corps!

Like her sister before her, her day of reckoning before Queen Catarina was coming -- soon.

The next afternoon, with the late-fall chill now blatantly evident in the air, Alexandra and Patrick left the Public Services building together. "Patrick," she remarked to him as they descended the stairs, "it's fixing to get real cold here, real soon."
"Yeah," Patrick agreed. "The air is really biting."
"And there are people still in the shelters from the earthquake."
"How many, do you know?"
"Ten to twenty, I don't remember. I need to call AJ and see if we can get some more blankets in the shelters. The newcomers have no idea how cold it can get here. Hidden Springs is about to show her true colors."
